The German Community

South Jutland (Soenderjylland) has a German Community of about 15,000. This Community was created as a result of the referendum and the resulting redrawing of the borders of Schleswig in 1920.

The kindergardens and schools of the German minority are the main institutions for the education of German language and culture. In Haderslev, you will find the Deutsche Schule Hadersleben, which has classes from 0 to 9 and hosts about 190 pupils. It is one of the biggest German schools in the area.

For children from age 2 upwards, a popular choice for parents is to register them in the German Kindergarden. The kindergarden (actually the oldest in Denmark) has places for about 48 children. It collaborates closely with the school in the teaching of German as the favoured language.

If you are interested in German language and culture, you will find a wide range of books, magazines,
audiobooks, dvds and games in the German Library.

Tourists can also borrow from this library and benefit from its excellent resources.

The newspaper for the minority - Der Nordschleswiger - has a local editorial office on the Gammelting. Der Nordschleswiger offers daily news about both the activities of the German Community and various local events.
A German priest in Haderslev cares for the German section of the town's two communities.

Leisure activities can be found in many of Haderslev's German associations. For example, there is the Haderslebener Turnerbund von 1865, or perhaps the German rowing club which has about 200 members and is known for its family-friendly atmosphere.

The music association Haderslebener Musikverein is part of the large oratory choir of the German minority. Every year, this choir performs a classical concert, often in Haderslev Cathedral.

The women's club der Haderslebener Frauenverein belongs to the social service Sozialdienst Nordschleswig.

The Frauenverein offers travel to families and seniors, conferences and afternoons of entertainment.

The umbrella organisation of the minority is the Bund Deutscher Nordschleswiger. The Schleswigsche Partei is the political party of the minority, representing the German Community in the town council by means of a special regulation. The German member of the town council is BDN general secretary Uwe Jessen.

The German Community in Nordschleswig wants to be considered as a bridge between Germany and Denmark, and to add variety and a particular character of the area.
